Brainwavz has been making waves in the audio segment since 2008 with their good sounding, well packaged audio products at reasonable prices. Today we get Brainwavz BLU-200 Bluetooth earphones with aptX technology.
What is aptX?
It is an audio coding technology for Bluetooth stereo products which aims to offer better quality audio than standard Bluetooth. In some cases, standard Bluetooth can have a really bad degrading sound quality, especially for stereo music. In order to fix this, aptX was developed so one would get CD quality audio, almost indistinguishable from regular wired headsets. See how aptX works.
Build and Design: 7.5
At first glance, the earphones look a little weird due to the protruding casing. My cousin brother on seeing it called them “mini-missiles”.
However, this design lends itself to the fact that these “mini-missiles” with matt black aluminium body have the earphone drivers, a tiny little battery, charging port and an additional Wing attachment space all within the earphone casing.
The cable is flat and tangle free. Thankfully, the 3-button remote works well with all mobile operating systems, Apple iOS, Android and Windows phones.
Did I get the right earphones?
At first, I thought I got the wrong earphones, perhaps the cheaper BLU-100 in a BLU-200 packaging as the wings were clearing missing. I was pleasantly surprised to know that the wings are detachable (a real nice touch) and come as an attachment in the ear tips pouch.
Loads of accessories
Brainwavz loves to shower users with several accessories out of the box. You not only get a full set of small, medium and large size of ear tips, but also 1 set of Comply S-400 ear tips, a handy earphone Hardcase, a pair of Ear Hooks, a Micro USB charging cable and a Velcro cable tie.
The earphones sound really good overall. By no means is the sound neutral as audiophiles would want but fun and enjoyable.
The bass in the Blu-200 is pronounced, you will hear more bass than usual but thankfully it is nothing like overly “enhanced bass” of the Sennheiser CX 3.00. The bass here you’ll get is typically low bass/sub-bass which doesn’t cut (significantly) into other frequencies. These earphones are perfect for music genres with heavier bass emphasis and impact.
The mids are good, though feel a bit recessed. This could very well be the bass eating into mids, you may need to notch the bass down a bit. The mids though don’t have the sharpness that better head/earphones can provide but aren’t lack lustre either, they just don’t stand out.
The highs are okay for most of the part, they feel balanced, though in some songs I felt I needed to pump up the highs to suit the bass that the earphones were spewing out. The highs do seem as if they are smoothed out at the higher frequency range, this doesn’t give the clearest sharpest highs but also doesn’t add sibilance that fatigues the ear at higher volumes.
These are not for…
The convenience of Bluetooth, lesser wires and the earphone wings that help stay on the ears may suggest that these are for jogging, vigorous sports, sweating a lot, but these are not. Profuse sweating can ruin earphones real fast, what you probably need are sports earphones meant to take such beating such as the Sennheiser PMX 686G.
Call Quality: 8/10
The call quality was good, loud and clear. When speaking on the phone, the person opposite couldn’t make out the difference between my voice with the Bluetooth earphones or without, which goes to show how good the mic is.
The earphones can be worn in two ways, behind the neck and at the front like regular earphones. When behind the neck, the mic does get pushed back while in the front, the mic sits close to the mouth.
The battery is 60 mAh with a rated time of 4 hours, expect to get approx. 3 hrs 30 mins out of it. The standby time is 100 hours.
That’s pretty good for just a 60 mAH battery. The primary feature of Bluetooth 4.0 is Low Energy (BLE) that drastically improves the stamina of Bluetooth-enabled devices.
Verdict and Price in India
I for one really enjoyed these earphones. Not many Bluetooth earphones get it right, but Brainwavz BLU-200 does at the price of Rs 3,500. At this price you get a 2-year warranty, a lot of additional accessories, a sturdily built earphone and a good sounding one with pronounced low/sub-bass.
