During Reliance Industries Limited’s 47th annual general meeting, Chairman Mukesh Ambani outlined Jio’s ambitious plans to lead India’s 5G revolution. With the increasing availability of affordable 5G smartphones in the market, Ambani emphasized that Reliance Jio is poised to capture the majority of the rapidly growing 5G adoption across the country.

He noted that nearly all smartphones priced above Rs 8,000 (approximately $96) sold in India are now 5G-ready, signalling a significant shift towards the new generation of mobile technology.

“Jio stands as a true deep-tech innovator. At the core of our success is our fully homegrown 5G stack, developed by Jio’s talented engineers. This end-to-end solution, tailored for India’s unique needs, has proven itself on a national scale,” says Mukesh Ambani

Ambani highlighted that as these 5G devices become more affordable, the adoption rate on Jio’s network will accelerate, driving further increases in data consumption. With Jio’s established leadership in 5G coverage, capacity, and quality, the company is well-positioned to dominate the 5G market in India.

Completion of Pan-India 5G Rollout
Jio has successfully completed the nationwide rollout of its 5G network, making it the largest 5G operator in India. Currently, over 85% of the 5G radio cells operating in the country belong to Jio, a testament to the company’s rapid expansion and technological capabilities.

“Jio has transformed India from 5G-dark to 5G-bright, creating one of the world’s most advanced 5G networks. Jio True 5G has also achieved the world’s fastest 5G adoption. In just two years, over 130 million customers have embraced Jio True 5G,” says Mukesh Ambani

Ambani proudly stated that Jio has transformed India from a “5G-dark” to a “5G-bright” nation, creating one of the world’s most advanced 5G networks.

Jio’s technological infrastructure leverages its vast 5G spectrum holdings, standalone (SA) architecture, and advanced technologies like carrier aggregation and network slicing. Ambani emphasized that Jio is the only operator in India, and among the first globally, to fully harness the potential of 5G technology.

Impact on India’s Mobile Landscape
Jio True 5G has seen the fastest adoption rate globally, with over 130 million customers embracing the network in just two years. As the nationwide deployment of 5G by Jio and rival Bharti Airtel nears completion, both companies have begun offering 5G fixed wireless access (FWA) services to consumers and enterprises alike.

As more users migrate to 5G, the freed-up 4G capacity presents a unique opportunity for Jio to onboard over 200 million 2G users onto its 4G network. The company’s JioBharat initiative, which offers entry-level 4G phones at prices lower than traditional 2G devices, underscores its commitment to a “2G-mukt” (2G-free) India. Ambani noted that nearly half of the 2G customers upgrading their devices now choose JioBharat, highlighting the unmatched value and appeal of Jio’s offerings.

This strategic push into 5G and the ongoing effort to transition India’s vast 2G user base to more advanced networks are set to further consolidate Jio’s dominance in the country’s telecommunications landscape.
