RED Digital Cinema has announced the launch of two new cinema cameras, the V-Raptor [X] Z Mount and the Komodo-X Z Mount, marking the first models in the all-new Z CINEMA series. Developed in collaboration with Nikon, these cameras integrate Nikon’s Z mount, giving filmmakers and content creators greater flexibility in lens choice while maintaining RED’s industry-leading cinematic quality.

This launch represents a new chapter in RED and Nikon’s partnership, bringing together Nikon’s optical expertise with RED’s advanced cinema technology. The Z CINEMA series aims to deliver top-tier imaging solutions for filmmakers, high-end production houses, and content creators worldwide.

A New Era for Lens Flexibility

One of the biggest highlights of the V-Raptor [X] Z Mount and Komodo-X Z Mount is their support for the Nikon Z mount system. This means filmmakers can now use a wider variety of lenses, including the high-quality NIKKOR Z lenses, known for their sharpness and minimal aberration.

For those who love classic lenses, RED is making it easy to adapt vintage NIKKOR F lenses using the Mount Adapter FTZ II. The cameras also support power zoom control with Nikon’s latest NIKKOR Z 28-135mm f/4 PZ lens, providing smoother zoom functionality for professional videographers.

RED and Nikon see this collaboration as a step forward in imaging innovation, with both brands working together to expand creative possibilities for filmmakers.

V-Raptor [X] Z Mount: Powerhouse Performance

RED’s V-Raptor [X] has been a favourite among professionals for its exceptional low-light performance, high resolution, and dynamic range. Now, with the Z mount, it brings even more versatility to cinematographers.

The camera boasts an 8K VV global shutter sensor, capturing stunning visuals with up to 20+ stops of dynamic range in Extended Highlights mode. This means richer colours, finer details, and smoother tones, even in tricky lighting conditions. The V-Raptor [X] Z Mount is designed for those who demand cutting-edge imaging technology without compromise.

Komodo-X Z Mount: Compact, Yet Powerful

For those who prefer a smaller, more agile camera, the Komodo-X Z Mount packs a serious punch. It features a 6K Super 35 global shutter sensor, offering wide dynamic range and high-speed performance in a compact form factor.

The camera supports 6K recording at up to 80 fps and 4K at up to 120 fps, delivering smooth, high-resolution footage. With RED’s signature colour science, developed over two decades in the filmmaking industry, the Komodo-X Z Mount is built to produce stunning, cinema-quality images.

It also supports RED’s proprietary R3D Redcode RAW format, which provides greater flexibility in post-production while keeping file sizes manageable.

Availability and Accessories

The V-Raptor [X] Z Mount and Komodo-X Z Mount are now available through RED Digital Cinema and its authorised dealers. Filmmakers looking for even more flexibility can opt for the RED Z to PL Adapter Pack, which allows the use of PL-mount lenses, expanding creative possibilities even further.

With this new Z CINEMA series, RED and Nikon are reshaping the future of digital filmmaking, offering unparalleled flexibility, high-end imaging, and groundbreaking technology in one powerful package.
