Qualcomm and Google have teamed up to give carmakers the tools they need to develop advanced AI voice assistants. The new collaboration will focus on creating innovative in-car systems powered by artificial intelligence, helping manufacturers roll out smarter, more personalised experiences for drivers and passengers.

This initiative is built on Google’s Android Automotive OS (AAOS), the tech giant’s infotainment platform designed specifically for vehicles.

In this platform, Qualcomm will provide its Snapdragon Digital Chassis along with Google Cloud and AAOS which will power the upcoming digital cockpits. These cockpits will feature interactive voice assistants, real-time driving updates, and immersive maps, promising a more engaging experience on the road.

As part of this rollout, Qualcomm introduced two new chips to support these systems. The Snapdragon Cockpit Elite chip will handle dashboard operations, while the Snapdragon Ride Elite will power autonomous driving features. With these additions, carmakers will be able to design their own bespoke AI assistants that work independently from smartphones, creating unique and marketable features for their customers.

AI is becoming increasingly important in the automotive world, with other manufacturers also exploring similar solutions. For example, Volkswagen announced at CES 2024 that they will integrate ChatGPT into its newer models so that their customers can interact with their cars in a beter and easier manner using vocal commands. Though adoption of AAOS started slowly, it’s now being used in vehicles from brands such as Chevrolet, Honda, Volvo, and Rivian, reflecting the growing demand for smarter in-car tech.

This collaboration between Qualcomm and Google marks another step forward in transforming the driving experience. By enabling manufacturers to craft their own AI voice systems, the partnership aims to offer drivers a seamless, intuitive interface that makes journeys both safer and more enjoyable. With competition heating up in the smart vehicle space, this new venture could put Qualcomm and Google at the forefront of automotive innovation.
