PM Modi cautions public against deepfakes, has a stern warning for AI companies

In his address at the BJP’s Diwali Milan programme, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grave concerns over the misuse of artificial intelligence to create deepfake videos. He deemed it a “big concern” and announced measures to combat the rising threat. PM Modi disclosed that he has directed the ChatGPT team to actively flag deepfakes and issue warnings when such manipulated videos circulate on the internet. “During the times of Artificial Intelligence, it is important that technology should be used responsibly,” he asserted, highlighting the need for ethical AI practices. “I saw a video recently where I was singing. People who like me forwarded it,” he said addressing journalists at BJP’s Diwali Milan programme at the party’s headquarters here. The Prime Minister urged the media to play a role in educating the public about the potential dangers of deepfake technology. He emphasized the responsibility of all stakeholders, including technology developers and media outlets, to ensure the responsible use of AI. The call for caution comes in the wake of a recent controversy involving a deepfake video featuring actress Rashmika Mandanna, Katrina Kaif, and more recently, Kajol. The video with Rashmika Mandanna, which morphed Mandanna’s face onto another woman’s body, triggered widespread demands for regulatory measures. In response to the incident, Union Minister for Electronics & Technology, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, labelled deepfakes as a “more dangerous and damaging form of misinformation” and stressed the obligation of social media platforms to address the issue. Minister Chandrasekhar, citing legal obligations, asserted that online platforms have a duty to prevent the spread of misinformation, especially concerning deepfakes. The Union Minister underscored the government’s commitment to the safety and trust of citizens, particularly women and children who are often targeted by such deceptive content. The government has laid down strict penalties for the creation and circulation of deepfakes, imposing a ₹1 lakh fine and a three-year jail term as deterrent measures. With the Prime Minister’s proactive approach and the government’s commitment to tackling the issue, efforts are underway to curb the harmful impact of deepfake technology on society.
