Users of OpenAI’s ChatGPT reported outage once again on Wednesday evening (April 2), days after the popular chatbot ran into problems following the introduction of its free image generation tool. OpenAI also confirmed the outage on its official page. Hundreds of users also reported the outage on Downdetector as well as on social media platforms.
The outage mainly affected ChatGPT, with disruptions in three components. The web version was still working, but iOS and Android users faced issues.
The outage follows a similar disruption on Tuesday evening, when 1,594 users globally reported issues. 94 per cent of complaints were related to ChatGPT, raising concerns about OpenAI’s ability to manage the increasing demand for generative AI services.
OpenAI didn’t provide any reason for the outage, but it’s likely linked to the overload due to Ghibli and the added image-generating features.
The Ghibli trend took social media by storm, which saw OpenAI adding over 1 million users in an hour. Interestingly, the company expanded the Ghibli style image generating tool for free users. However, due to the massive number of users, the company restricted it to only 3 image generations per day.
Frustrated users took to X to express their views, with some saying it could hurt their productivity for the day.
“ChatGPT is down so I may as well take the rest of the day off,” a user wrote on X.
