With practically all tech companies investing heavily in AI, industry analysts are seeing a new kind of war emerge — the war for AI talent or engineers who can work with AI models. Even though OpenAI, the de facto leader of sorts when it comes to generative AI, have had to poach talent from other companies, regularly.

Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, recently revealed that the company is increasing compensation for its AI engineers amid intensifying competition for talent in the industry.

In a post on his social media platform, X, Musk revealed Tesla’s efforts to boost pay for AI engineering team members, provided they progress milestones.

“Tesla is increasing comp (contingent on progress milestones) of our AI engineering team,” said Musk. “They (OpenAI) have aggressively recruited Tesla engineers with massive compensation offers and have unfortunately been successful in a few cases,” he added, while posting.

He cited aggressive recruitment efforts by OpenAI, the organization behind ChatGPT, which has successfully lured some Tesla engineers with substantial compensation offers.

Musk’s comments came in response to a report from The Information detailing the departure of Tesla AI scientist Ethan Knight to join Musk’s xAI startup. Musk explained that Knight had considered joining OpenAI, prompting a decision between xAI and the alternative.

As one of the world’s wealthiest individuals, Musk has been deeply involved in the development of AI, having played a role in founding OpenAI before parting ways with the organization.

He now approaches AI from various angles, leveraging it within Tesla to advance self-driving technology while also pursuing AI initiatives through his xAI startup.

Highlighting the significance of talent in driving advancements in AI, Musk emphasized the talent war in the industry, particularly evident within Tesla’s AI and autonomy team, which comprises over 200 skilled engineers.

Despite the competitive landscape, Musk expressed optimism about Tesla’s progress in autonomy, noting an acceleration in pace.

“There are over 200 excellent engineers in the Tesla AI/Autonomy team Tesla’s pace of progress with autonomy is accelerating. The talent war for AI is the craziest talent war I’ve ever seen,” he said.

The intersection of AI and autonomous technology represents a crucial frontier for Tesla and the broader automotive industry, with talent acquisition playing a pivotal role in shaping future developments.
