YouTube now serves a billion users every month

A proud Google has announced that YouTube, in a record-smashing feat, is now serving one billion viewers every month. Considering the video hosting website is only eight years old, this is some achievement for YouTube.

In a blog post announcing the milestone, YouTube wrote, “In the last eight years you’ve come to YouTube to watch, share and fall in love with videos from all over the world. Tens of thousands of partners have created channels that have found and built businesses for passionate, engaged audiences…And today, we’re announcing a new milestone: YouTube now has more than a billion unique users every single month.”

Showing just how seriously businesses take YouTube, the video hosting site wrote that every single brand listed in the Ad Age Top 100 list is running a campaign on YouTube. The site’s social connect is a great tool for marketers and advertisers to exploit equally.

Serving a billion viewers every month!

So what do a billion people logging on to YouTube look like? To make things easy for the imagination, YouTube put in a few examples. Nearly one out of every two people on the Internet visits YouTube, it wrote. If YouTube were to be a country, it would be the third largest in the world after China and India. We’re pretty sure the national flag of a YouTube country would have a lot of cats on it!

While YouTube is reaching the one billion club only right now, late last year a video on the site became the first to reach a billion views. No prizes for guessing, the video was K-Pop artist Psy’s viral hit Gangnam Style. The popularity of the song and its dance were already sky high and it officially became the most watched video on Google’s video sharing site ever.

The catchy Korean song with its trademark horse dance was first uploaded on YouTube on July 15 and became a viral sensation instantly, with parody videos from all over the world cropping up. In just a matter of a few months, Gangnam Style has surpassed YouTube hits such as Justin Bieber’s “Baby” that has 841 million views currently, Jennifer Lopez’s ‘On the Floor’ that has 658 million views and the viral “Charlie bit my finger – again” that has 517 million views currently.

In just a couple of months post its upload, Gangnam Style had already become a hit enough to gain a place in the Guinness Book of World Records for the highest number of likes on a YouTube video ever, with 2.2 million of them. The song overtook competitor LMFAO’s “Party Rock Anthem” to win this record. As of today, the likes stand at well over seven million, and YouTube has celebrated the one billion views with a small, animated figure of Psy doing the trademark horse dance besides the number of views.
