Your smartphone is a PC: Ubuntu's mobile OS is here

Ubuntu OS for mobile phones is now here.

The new mobile OS will presently only work on the Google Nexus Phone, (the one which was released by Samsung). Ubuntu will release an open-source code as a file and users can install it on their Nexus phone. The OS will replace Android once you install it.

While the first devices with Ubuntu OS won’t be sold till January 2014, the makers of the software, Canonical, will be showing off the OS at the Consumer Electronics Show in January this year.

However, Engadget and TheVerge have managed to get their hands on a Google Nexus device with Ubuntu.

According to the Engadget review, the User interface is dependent on swiping at the edge and makes it similar to Windows Mobile 8 and Windows 8 for tablets.

The review also says: voice control is in attendance, and that an app store is in the works, with a mix of both web apps and native apps - with the latter type being able to make better use of the hardware.

The Verge review states, there’s no “home” button to speak of in Ubuntu - it’s all based on gestures.

Currently it seems that an app store is still in the works. For now web apps written in HTML 5 for all other platforms should run on the Ubuntu OS.
