Your iPhone Tracks Even When Location's Off

While some people are content with suing Apple, others are finding ways out of this tracking business. The whole deal behind Android’s tracking is related to location services and if you turn location services off on your Android device, it reportedly stops logging location information. Not so much with the iPhone. Several tech enthusiasts have experimented with turning off location services on their iPhone, documenting all the logs that their phones have kept so far, venturing to a new place (with location services still off) and then looking at the location logs again. They’ve reported that even though location services have been switched off, their phone continued to collect their location information.

The data collected comprised of timestamps and location points. Granted, this location information was cell phone tower triangulation. Some location points were actually miles away from where the phone actually was. Apple says that this information when received remains anonymous, but they’ve also said that this information doesn’t actually get to them. So even though Steve Jobs has spoken a ‘countable-on-one-hand’ number of words on the matter, the fact is, there’s still no certainty of what exactly happens to this information once it’s logged.
