You could soon be able to surf YouTube through a DTH service

How would you like to be able to see YouTube videos on your TV? You won’t need to bother plugging in your laptop and dealing with connecting to the internet if Google has its way. The Internet giant is mulling bringing its video sharing service to DTH providers in India.

According to report by The Economic Times, Google’s Global Director for Platform Partnerships, Francisco Varela, seems keen on bringing YouTube’s streaming services to the television screen in association with Direct-to-Home cable providers. “When we talk to direct-to-home providers or television makers or device makers, it’s so that you can watch YouTube on every screen you have, in a fully scalable way,” Varela said.

Varela declined to mention a time-frame as to when we could be able to stream videos using DTH connections. He didn’t name potential FTH partners in India either, but said that the company was looking at working on a tie-up “as soon as possible”. It could be a while before the details are sorted out between Google and other companies. If this works out, we could be looking at the likes of Dish TV, Tata Sky, Airtel Digital TV, Videocon D2H, Reliance Digital TV and Sun Direct offering a YouTube option along with the regular suite of channels.

The move seems to be an exciting one for everyone involved. YouTube stands to gain a lot more eyeballs than the 55 million unique Indian visitors it got last year . The service is also a major revenue generator for Google and brings in heavy money through advertising. Offering the service as a package in the country will bring in more ad revenue and long-term advertisers.

DTH providers’ target audience overlaps smoothly with ones YouTube serves – the younger, urban population. While network speeds are going to remain a bit of an issue within India, audiences in the country are up for a treat if Google does roll this service out.
