Yahoo! CEO Marissa Mayer has a lot to smile about. After pushing the Internet company to regain most of its lost glory, the happy looking Mayer announced that Yahoo! was now seeing 800 million monthly active users, with 350 million through mobiles.
Mayer, on stage at the TechCrunch Disrupt conference at San Francisco not only showed off numbers for Yahoo! but also defended the company’s new logo that less than failed to impress most users. In a question specifically targeted at the logo redesign, Mayer said that she intended to reinforce that Yahoo! did things internally rather than splurge dollars. Yahoo! was focused on its products than just the logo, she said.
MAUs on the rise
“I like the way the logo turned out, and I like the way that we did it,” Mayer told Michael Arrington. The change in logo had been a long time coming, is the general consensus. Yahoo! was using the same old logo since the past 18 years. The new one, however, was only a simple change in the older one, making it look a lot leaner, with the Yahoo! yodel, the exclamation mark and the colour purple intact.
The logo turned out to be a bit of a non-issue when Mayer went on to announce that the company had been seeing 800 million monthly active users. A huge chunk of the traffic came from the company’s mobile apps. The best part – and one that will really do well for Yahoo’s image – is the fact that this data does not even include the traffic that Tumblr is seeing. The blogging platform was acquired by Yahoo! earlier this year for a tidy sum of $1.1 billion.
Yahoo, like most big companies today, has shifted its focus to mobile and applications over the past few months. Under Mayer’s guidance, the company has picked up a few mobile-centric startups and even has concentrated on revamping its mobile applications.
