 "Yahoo! considering buying Qwiki for $50 million")
Yahoo!, it seems, is toying with the idea of going shopping again. AllThingsD reports that Yahoo! is “considering” a $50 million deal to acquire Qwiki, the maker of the recent Qwiki iPhone app that turns images and videos from your camera roll into brief movies that can be shared.
Sources also told the website that the parties are in advanced stages of discussion over the acquisition. Qwiki’s iPad application, which is the company’s earliest offering, allows users to make video summaries of search terms. Last year, Qwiki put out a platform for bloggers and online publishers, and even partnered with ABC News. Later that year, Yahoo-owned Bing said that it would display Qwiki videos on its search pages below Wikipedia, allowing users to play the videos without leaving the page.
Will Yahoo! buy it?
While there is only this much that can be said as of now, Yahoo! certainly seems to be on a buying spree. It was reported earlier this month that the company was seriously talking about buying address book apps and plugins maker Xobni.
According to sources that are close to the situation, while discussions have been going on for a while, a concrete deal now seems to be in the pipeline. The important word here is “seems”, with only an official announcement ensuring the certainty of this deal.
Yahoo! only recently acquired Tumblr for $1.1 billion. The company soon moved its official blog to yahoo.tumblr.com as its first act of commitment to the blogging platform. Yahoo! CEO Marissa Meyer estimated that the takeover could grow Yahoo!’s audience by 50 percent – to more than a billion monthly visitors – and increase traffic by about 20 percent. She said the acquisition will see Tumblr bring in about 50 billion posts to Yahoo!’s media network and search experiences, and the two companies would also be leveraging the “seamless” advertising opportunities.
