Yahoo! closes $1.1 billion Tumblr acquisition

Yahoo! has finally completed the $1.1 billion acquisition of Tumblr. The deal that was announced exactly a month ago on May 20 has finished the month-long acquisition course and Tumblr is officially a part of the Yahoo! family now.

An excited Yahoo! CEO Marissa Mayer took to the company’s official blog on Tumblr to post yet another GIF-based happy announcement of the acquisition being completed. “We’re excited to announce that our deal to acquire Tumblr has closed… it’s official!” she wrote.

Mayer assured Tumblr fans yet again that the blogging platform will continue to operate as a separate platform with David Karp still in place as the CEO_. “Their product roadmap, their team, and tone will all remain the same as will their mission to empower creators and curators alike to do what they love best: create,”_ wrote the Yahoo! CEO.

She also announced the launch of Tumblr blogs for Yahoo! teams of Search, Mail, Messenger, Sports, Answers as well as Flickr. Accompanying the post was a GIF that showed two images that show the magnitude of the acquisition and one rather weird one that showed a cat and a dog running in a yard. Wonder whether Yahoo! was the cat or the dog.

Yahoo! has maintained that the deal is a unique one that will offer growth opportunities for both the companies. Tumblr will get a chance to use Yahoo’s personalisation technology as well as search infrastructure to let its users discover interesting content. Tumblr, on the other hand, can give Yahoo! complementary content with more than 50 billion blog posts and 75 million being added to it each day. “Yahoo! will support Tumblr’s efforts to create advertising opportunities that are seamless and enhance the user experience,” the press release announcing the acquisition read.
