Yahoo!China has responded to a threat from the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), saying it will sue the search engine for providing links to pirated content on their site. Alibaba.com, which owns majority of Yahoo!China, issued a statement saying it is not an MP3 link site, and it reserves all legal rights regarding damage to its reputation and ongoing business operations. In a statement to the press, alibaba.com said, “Yahoo!China is a general portal that provides an online search engine service to Chinese Internet users." While the IFPI claims that providing links for illegally downloading copyright protected material is illegal under a new Chinese law, Yahoo! China has defended itself saying it respects the rights of intellectual property right owners and its online services strictly adhere to laws, regulations and policies.
