It’s certainly the season of acquisitions. Hot on the heels of acquisitions by **Google** and **Facebook** , Yahoo has bought over Sparq, a mobile marketing company. Sparq announced the acquisition on its site, but the financial details of the acquisition haven’t been disclosed yet. According to Techcrunch, Sparq had earlier raised a total of $1.7 million over several small rounds of funding and managed to receive more than $650,000 last year alone.
There are no brownie points for guessing that owing to the losing revenue, Yahoo needs to push a mobile-strategy and monetise its user base. So, acquiring a startup like Sparq looks like the right move. Sparq’s claim to fame is something called “deep link” technology for mobile apps, which lets users jump to a certain spot within an app through a link in another app. So a link in a Dropbox email about new functionality added to the new app will take a person directly to that particular feature within the Dropbox app on their phone, instead of simply showing the app’s landing page and letting users figure it out. It’s certainly a great way for Yahoo to improve the functionality of many of its apps on Android and iOS.
Sparq’s team is all set to join Yahoo’s Sunnyvale campus. Jesse Chor, Founder & CEO has revealed that the startup will terminate its current service. He said, “We will be terminating our current service, and are reaching out to existing customers with support details. Please let us know if there is anything we can do to help during this transition period by contacting support@sparq.it.”
This acquisition is one of the many changes that Yahoo’s Chief Executive Officer Marissa Mayer has been introducing. The company recently acquired dynamic **Android launcher app Aviate** and we also heard about the sudden exit of the **Ex-Google employee** Henrique de Castro who joined the company 14 months ago.
Some other popular acquisitions this month include Facebook acquiring Bangalore-based Little Eye Labs and Google buying the smart-home startup Nest Labs.
