Xperia S gets the ICS update

Sony has announced that Ice Cream Sandwich or Android 4.0 has arrived for the Xperia S. With this upgrade, you will get new experiences and features, such as an all new Sony media experience with the new WALKMAN application, the Album application and the Movies application. The lock screen comes with improved functionality that allows you to access stuff without unlocking the screen. The update also brings a range of resizable widgets that provide you with improved personalization. Another feature that has been added is improved control of the user’s mobile data consumption. As part of the update, the recent Apps button allows for a clear overview of your applications. The latest available software is 6.1.A.0.452 and the release date was 2012-06-20, so be sure to check the notifications area to see if the update has arrived for your handset. The whole slew of features that arrive with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich are detailed in the video below.

It is important to know that Sony have also mentioned, “You may already have the latest software, depending on the date of purchase. Software updates are released at different times depending on operator and country. Therefore, we cannot give you an exact date for when a specific update will be available for your phone.” So, you might just have to wait a little longer for your phone to get the latest update.

The Xperia S

The Xperia S

In case you’ve forgotten, here’s a lowdown on the Specs of the Xperia S again:

  • Android Gingerbread (Upgradeable to ICS)
  • 4.3-inch HD display with a resolution of 1280 x 720
  • 1.5GHz dual-core processor with a MSM8260 chipset, 1GB RAM
  • 12 megapixel camera with Sony Exmor R sensor and 1080p video recording capabilities
  • 1.3 megapixel front camera with 720p@30 fps
  • 32GB internal memory
  • HDMI port
  • Weighs 144g

We’ve already reviewed the Xperia S and here’s what we had to say about the device, “The Xperia S is unlike any other flagship phone we’ve seen from Sony Ericsson in the past and represents a bold new direction for the company. The phone has a beautiful build and feels premium and packed to the gills with features. However, it’s far from perfect. There are some sensitivity issues with the capacitive buttons, camera performs poorly in low-light indoor shooting and the microSIM is annoying. However, at this price, it’s certainly one of the better options compared to the Sensation XE. If you can live with these little issues then we recommend the Xperia S for its beautiful screen, great design, good camera (for outdoor shooting) and feature rich app selection out-of-the-box."  It’s worth noting though, that a couple of quad-core handsets are now available at a price tag, which is slightly more than the Xperia S. This phone, however is the only one in Android to have a 12 megapixel camera sensor.

Do you own the Xperia S? If yes, have you received and used the latest Android 4.0 upgrade? Let us know whether you liked it or not, in the comments section below.
