Xiaomi to launch Mi 5 running Android 5.1 Lollipop-based MIUI 7

Celebrating its fifth anniversary, Xiaomi is also ready to introduce Mi 5 that will run the latest Android 5.1 Lollipop-based mobile operating system. The company will be working on Lollipop-based MIUI 7 user interface along with Android Open Kang Project (popularly known as AOKP). In a blogpost, AOKP revealed that team Kang members are working with Xiaomi for a new refreshed MIUI 7 that will be based on Lollipop 5.1 and come equipped in the Mi 5. “With Cyanogen partnering with various OEMs and OnePlus grabbing hold of the ParanoidAndroid team, the folks at Xiaomi started considering that to have a larger share of the international market, they needed to collaborate with some established custom ROM community, and hence since last year we had been in close talks,” the blog states. For those not in the know how, AOKP builds custom Android ROMs for devices, just like Cyanogen. The MIUI 7 has been internally codenamed MiKangy, and will evolve with the user, says the blog. “MIUI 7, (which the team internally calls codename MiKangy, not to be confused with MiKandi), is a whole new take on the Android UX. The idea behind it is to kang all important features from the top ROMs like CM, PA, Omni and AOKP and create an experience which completely submerges the user in his own world. The UI will evolve with the user, and thus a few months after usage, the UI of each Mi 5 phone will be different – personalised to the traits of it’s individual user,” the blog explains. Recently, the company also announced price cuts for the Mi 4 in China, clearly indicating that the Mi 5 is on the way. Mi India has also decided to shed its ‘online-only’ image and team up with the retail chain **‘The Mobile Store’** to sell select Mi smartphones including the Xiaomi Mi 4.
