WWDC 2013: Apple announces next version of OS X - Mavericks!

Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference for 2013, has finally started off, and the first goodies are out of the bag already. At the keynote, Apple unveiled the next major version of its desktop OS - OS X 10.9 Maverick.

Apple’s Craig Federighi took to the stage to introduce the new OS X version, which leaves behind the older naming convention. “We want a name for the next 10 years. It’s the places that inspire us here in California. Where OS X is designed,“he said. Incidentally, OS X Mavericks is the first California-themed release from Apple.

One new feature in OS X 10.9 is the tabbed Finder window. It also includes tags support, which means documents and folders can be tagged on your Mac. Not just that, if you were itching for multiple displays on this latest desktop OS, then looks like Apple heard you and now has you sorted and the demo shown on stage worked flawlessly.

In Mavericks, Apple has aligned the work of the computer’s power transitions and thus reduced CPU activity up to 72%. In addition to that, compressed memory allows rapid compression of the free memory, which increases response time, the company claims.

In addition, Mavericks brings support for Apple Maps and iBooks. Apple Maps will bring street maps, 3D flyover data and turn-by-turn directions and users can push map locations from the desktop to your iPhone and vice versa. The redesigned iBooks app has a flatter, more visual design. The Notification Center gets a quick reply feature, and a way to receive mobile push notifications on the desktop. Notifications that would appear on the phone or tablet lockscreen will appear on the desktop as well.

Developer preview of Mavericks available from today, while the final release will hit stores by the fall season.
