WP7 IE9 Beats Pants Off of iPhone 4 and Android in HTML5 Speed Test

In a further effort to prove that WP7 is very capable of giving both iOS and Android a run for their money, Microsoft recently showcased a small demo of IE9 on an HTC device against the iPhone 4’s Safari and the Nexus S’ Android native browser. The idea was to simply demo just how well WP7’s IE9 browser, all hardware accelerations provided, would handle HTML5.

The war rages on

The demo website was one that can be used for benchmarking browser speeds and also to provide frame rate details to the users. Joe Belfiore, Director of the Windows Phone program is the gent in the video below and went so far as to give the iPhone 4 head start of a few seconds and simultaneously started the sites on the Nexus S and WP7 device. The winner was of course, the HTC clocking in a 20 FPS while the Nexus S came in second at 11 FPS and the iPhone 4 shockingly at just 2 FPS.

Microsoft is trying really hard to boost the overall functionality of their mobile OS and focusing now on bringing a better web browsing experience to the handset. IE9 on mobile is designed to offer the best ‘desktop-like’ browsing experience and sources are also saying that ship a Silverlight runtime inside of IE9 mobile is also in the works.

This is of course their “Mango” update that we’ve been hearing about and although it’s not really in the near future it is going to be something to look forward to. The battle for mobile OS’ just got taken up a notch and I’m curious to see how Apple and Google will react to this demo.
