Whoever is under the impression that diamonds are still a girl’s best friend, is in for a surprise. A recent survey study by women-centric cable TV network Oxygen Media has revealed that women are now choosing to be more tech savvy and have apparently switched loyalties to tech toys, gadgets and gizmos. According to the survey, four out of every five women felt comfortable using technology, with 46 percent doing their own computer troubleshooting. Moreover, women were found on average to own 6.6 technology devices, while men own 6.9, blurring the perceived tech divide between the sexes.
Another survey called “Women’s Watch: Girls Gone Wired” conducted by market researcher Teenage Research Unlimited revealed that given the choice, women opt for tech items rather than luxury items like jewelry or vacations. The study had surveyed over 1,400 women and 700 men between ages 15 to 49 to review comparisons. The study also found that 77 percent of women surveyed, prefer a new Plasma TV to a diamond solitaire necklace, and 56 percent would opt for a new Plasma TV over a weekend vacation in Florida! While skeptics may point out that the fascination for Plasma TV might have something to do with women’s obsession with soap operas and the like on TV, the fact still remains that women are indeed getting tech savvy.
The survey results come as news for advertisers who might have to do some rethinking in their advertising strategies for women.
