With 12 million Internet users, Mumbai tops list of connected Indian cities

India’s economic capital, Mumbai, has emerged to be the city with the highest number of Internet users in India, ahead of cities like New Delhi and Bangalore. A report by Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) has revealed that Mumbai has a sum total of 12 million Internet users in India, the highest in the country.

Following Mumbai – but nowhere close to it – is New Delhi, with 8.1 million users. Next comes in Hyderabad with 4.7 million users. Breaking the myth of the city having a high usage of Internet users, the IT hub of the country, Bangalore, turns out to be in the sixth position, with merely 3.8 million users in India.

Bangalore only comes in sixth as far as Internet penetration goes

In the fourth and fifth positions are Chennai and Kolkata with 4.5 and 4.4 million Internet users respectively. Kolkata, with 47 percent year-over-year growth, shows the highest growth of Internet users among top cities of the country. Mumbai comes in a close second with 45 percent year-over-year growth, followed by Bangalore with 53 percent and Pune with 37 percent.

Ahmedabad, according to IAMAI, registers the lowest growth rate among the top eight cities with only 26 percent year-over-year growth. Nilotpal Chakravarti, Associate Vice-President of the IAMAI has attributed the growth of users in Mumbai to an increase in awareness regarding the Internet. Also to be noted is the fact that Mumbai in this study includes Thane and Navi Mumbai, the financial capital’s satellite cities too.

Most Internet users, according to the study, are college-going students and the growth in the numbers is being accelerated by adoption by the youth, and more surprisingly, housewives in India. The latter bracket involves an increase in the usage of smartphones to access the net, especially when it comes to browsing social networking websites. “Easy access to internet on mobile phones has resulted in greater internet penetration across India, with smartphones available at a range of prices. Most phones now have internet. Many features on these phones will not be available without internet,” Chakravarti said.
