Winners of GSMA's Asia Mobile Awards 2010 - Some Predictable Some Not So Much

What's interesting is the difference in the judges' choice best app and the overall best app.

The GSMA announced the winners of the Asia Mobile Awards 2010, which were held at Mobile Asia Congress in Hong Kong. The Asia Mobile Awards were created by the GSMA to showcase the diversity of mobile content, products and services across the region. This year’s awards focused heavily on developments in the mobile application market, and the GSMA worked with mobile analytics firm Distimo to compile app store data for leading platforms such as Apple iOS, Android, Nokia, BlackBerry and Microsoft Windows Mobile across 27 countries in Asia to select the winners for the five app-related categories. The Best Device award was selected from nominations of the top-selling handset manufacturers across Asia Pacific and, along with the Best App award, was judged by a panel of key industry analysts and journalists.

The GSMA Awards, drumroll please

Anyway, enough with the blabber. The top entertainment app was, no surprises there. The top games app was Angry Birds (Rovio Mobile), it would have been a sin to give it to anyone else anyway. The top lifestyle application went to Tweakersoft's AroundMe which is a lot like Google's Places but more than being location based, it's locality based. The top business app was DataViz Inc's Documents to Go – Premium Office Suite. Here's where it gets interesting, the best overall app went to Angry Birds but the judges chose Google Maps as their choice application. I mean, yeah, Google Maps is good and helpful and all but how can it not beat the feathered fury? Especially since Angry Birds was released this past year and Google Maps has been around for a while now? The best mobile/handset went to the iPhone 4. This is a little surprising, especially because of the whole antennagate fiasco, but hey, if the GSMA can look past that, they're good folk.
