Windows 8 becomes the third most used OS in the world

The latest operating system by Microsoft, Windows 8, has added another feather to its cap. A report by Net Market Share, an online platform that monitors the market share statistics for Internet technologies, has stated that Windows 8 is the third most used operating system in the world.

The survey stated that Windows 7 was the most widely used OS as almost 44 percent of the user used the OS launched in 2009. Windows XP was second in the ranks with almost 37 percent users running their devices on it. Windows 8 finished a distant third with only 5.1 percent users using the latest OS by Microsoft. However, it left behind Windows Vista, which had only 4.6 percent users.

The survey also stated that Windows 8, which was launched in August 2012, had shown a steady growth in the number of users over the period of one year. This growth can be credited to the various additions that the company has brought to its flagship product since the launch. The Windows market has also seen a manifold increase in the quantity and the quality of the products offered. Moreover, the usage of Windows 8 on smartphones could have also added to this success.

This data is collected on an annual base, which helps in giving an idea about the performance of the various OS available in the market. If this survey is any indication, then one could say Apple will have to plan out a new strategy that will help in capturing a larger market share in future, which currently seems to be dominated by Microsoft’s products.
