WhatsApp's revamped UI update now available on Play Store

WhatsApp has finally made its newest Holo-themed user interface official for Android phones today. The update was initially spotted last month when WhatsApp released the revamped version of the app as an APK on its website. Today, the app is available on the Play Store as an update.

The update has been long overdue and bumps the cross-platform messaging service to Ice Cream Sandwich levels. The app’s old, overused user interface was probably the only drawback of the app, making it look like a coincidental clone of its iOS version. The update now brings the sleek-looking interface that conforms to the Holo guidelines for phones running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and up.

The fonts look better than before and the over the top colour scheme is much more toned down with this update. Subtle colours for the app and the speech bubbles are what make this new UI look really exciting. Your smiley drawer has shifted homes and can be found to the left of your text line. Image previews too are now larger and the image window itself looks non-intrusive.

Bigger is better

The Google Play Store update is also slightly more improved than the APK WhatsApp released on its site. Besides minor changes, slight lag issues and bug fixes have been addressed in the official release.

The update will allow users the ability to purchase the service at 3 year and 5 year intervals with various discount options. WhatsApp is continually adding support for new languages with its updates and this time round, it has added support for Vietnamese.

Only yesterday, WhatsApp released its native application for BlackBerry 10 devices after a series of flip-flops. The fact that the app is built natively means that it is deeply integrated with BB10’s highlighted features like BlackBerry Flow.

The App is also fully integrated into BlackBerry Contacts that automatically scans your address book and picks out the contacts which can be used with WhatsApp. The addition of one of the world’s most popular instant messaging applications for BB10 devices suddenly makes them more appealing as you’re no longer shackled to that eco system alone.

Brian Acton, co-founder of WhatsApp, had to say about the new app: “BlackBerry has been a great platform for WhatsApp for many years. Delivering WhatsApp on BlackBerry 10 devices is in line with our goals of ensuring that our customers around the world can continue to communicate with the most important people in their lives.”

WhatsApp’s popularity is undoubtedly far more than any other cross-platform messaging app. Early in January WhatsApp had even confirmed its newest record—on December 31, the service saw a record 18 billion messages being processed. The total number of messages comprised 7 billion inbound messages and 11 billion outbound messages.
