WhatsApp processes 27 billion messages in one day

WhatsApp has announced that it processed an incredible 27 billion messages in one day, setting a record for the most messages processed on company level.

Breaking the figure down for clarity, WhatsApp in a tweet wrote that it processed 10 billion inbound and 17 billion outbound messages in just 24 hours. The cross-platform messaging service explains that the difference between inbound and outbound messages is due to group chat. “Sending one message into group chat of 10 people is 1:10 inbound:outbound,” explained WhatsApp in a tweet.

The 27 billion messages record is mind-boggling, especially since there doesn’t seem to have been any major event coinciding with it, or so it seems. The messaging service has not made the day this record was logged clear in its tweets. WhatsApp’s previous recorded best of 18 billion messages processed came on New Year’s Eve, 2012.

The cross-platform messaging app is an extremely popular alternative to SMS on platforms such as Android, iOS, Symbian BlackBerry, Nokia S40 and Windows Phone. The service works on your existing Internet data plan adding to its popularity value.

As proof of just how popular WhatsApp has become worldwide, Nokia released its Asha 210 in April with a dedicated button that launches the cross-platform messaging app on the phone. Earlier, only HTC ChaCha and the HTC First had a dedicated button for Facebook.

It’s hard to say how WhatsApp’s 27 billion messages in a day record stacks up against rivals such as WeChat, Kik Messenger, Viber and Nimbuzz as the companies are not very forthcoming with information about messages processed in a day. There is no doubting that WhatsApp is more widely used than most other cross-platform messaging apps. One needs to only take a look at Apple App Store and Google Play Store’s top charts to see that WhatsApp is still sitting pretty at the top.
