If one needed any more proof that WhatsApp has been reigning over cross-platform messaging apps, here it is. The app has come out and said that it is now serving 400 million monthly active users.
WhatsApp’s CEO, Jan Kuom, wrote in a blog post that the service ended up adding the last 100 million monthly active users to its kitty in the last four months alone. Along with the release of these numbers, WhatsApp has thumped its chest over the fact that these 400 million users are not just registered ones, but people who are actively using the service to send messages every month.
Reigning supreme
In a sort of a battle cry to other cross-platform messaging providers, WhatsApp has released MAU figures instead of the standard registered numbers. “When we say that you made this possible, we mean it,” Kuom writes. “WhatsApp has just 50 employees, and most of us are engineers. We’ve arrived at this point without spending a dollar on targeted ads or big marketing campaigns. We’re here because of all the people who share their WhatsApp stories with co-workers, friends, and loved ones – stories we love to hear.”
Now, while the number of people who’ve over time downloaded and used the application would be far more, WhatsApp is in a position to be able to boast about these numbers. According to data collected in the past month by App Annie, WhatsApp has consistently been ruling the charts on both iOS and Android platforms. In fact, on Android, WhatsApp is not only the top free app in the Communications section, it is the most popular application overall. On iOS too, WhatsApp remains the most popular app in the Social Networking category. It was also revealed this month that WhatsApp has 30 million users in India alone.
The country also features very prominently as a strong user base for the app makers. Kuom quoted an article, carried by Mumbai Mirror that spoke about doctors in India using WhatsApp to send each other electrocardiogram pictures of patients who’ve suffered heart attacks, saving valuable time and potentially lives.
WhatsApp is currently ruling the apps segment, and how. We had earlier written about WhatsApp’s move to make other apps irrelevant in India. The ball is now in the court of the likes of Facebook Messenger, Line, WeChat and Viber to put out numbers to challenge WhatsApp’s supremacy.
