WeChat is the second most downloaded iOS app in India this year

WeChat is riding the popularity wave with great aplomb. Within seven months of it being officially launched in India, the cross-platform messaging application has already been ranked as the second most downloaded iOS app. According to the Best of 2013 list on Apple’s App Store, WeChat is the top non-gaming app in India and the second most downloaded app overall. The only app that surged ahead of WeChat is reportedly Temple Run, the endless running game.

The company says that it currently has over 100 million registered users in international markets and is “continuing to grow at a rapid pace.” In comparison, WhatsApp is now serving 400 million monthly active users on a global level, which shows the huge lead the app has over its rivals, even though the likes of WeChat are catching up. Rahul Razdan, President of Tencent India said on the occasion, “In less than seven months of its launch in India, WeChat has gone on to become the overall 2nd most downloaded app in India. This goes on to show the growing popularity of WeChat amongst Indian youth and reflects the value it has added to the social lives of Indians.”

WeChat was officially launched in India in May, months after a soft-launch was done to test waters in the country. The app is in direct competition with the likes of WhatsApp, Line, Viber and even Facebook Messenger that have quite a fan following in the country. To combat this competition, WeChat has gone into localising content on the application to lure in more users. It routinely releases sticker packs for festive and other special occasions. Last we saw, a “Master Blaster” sticker pack, modeled around cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar after his retirement.

The company also allows brands to connect with fans and customers, via the in-built social channel. Companies like Café Coffee Day, Big Bazaar, Colors and Hungama, which have a huge user base in India, are already communicating with their fans and users through these official accounts.
