London: Security researchers say the website of Tibet’s government-in-exile has been rigged to infect the computers of Chinese-speaking visitors, the latest in a series of cyberattacks against Tibetan activists.

Kaspersky Lab said Tuesday that attackers modified the Chinese-language website of the Central Tibetan Administration to infect visitors with rogue software.

The attackers’ identity is unknown, but politically active Tibetans have frequently been targeted by a wide-ranging electronic espionage campaign that many blame on Beijing. Kaspersky said these particular hackers have been active for years.

Tibetan Administration spokesman Tashi Phuntsok confirmed that the Chinese-language site was compromised but said technicians were able to restore it early Tuesday. The site gets roughly 700 visitors a day.
