The International Space Station is one of the few locations available for scientists to conduct studies and experiments in near-zero-gravity environments. One of the latest experiments conducted involves studying Newton’s Laws of Motion with the help of a fidget spinner. [caption id=“attachment_4146429” align=“alignleft” width=“380”] Image: Randy Bresnik[/caption] NASA astronauts have posted a video of the crew members on board the international space station finding out exactly how long a fidget spinner spins in space. The fidget spinners in space do not spin exactly the way they do on Earth. There is no requirement to hold the central area, and the whole spinner spins. In space, the spinner does not have to spin around the central ring only, and can spin in any direction. Additional tricks are possible by slightly nudging the spinner to make it float in the direction you want it to go. In the nearly zero-gravity environment, the friction between bearing case and the spinner is reduced. Randy Bresnik, the commander of the Expedition 53 crew on board the International Space Station is seen playing with the fidget spinner along with fellow NASA astronauts Mark Vande Hei and Joe Acaba, as well as Paolo Nespoli from the European Space Agency. After being done with the fidget spinner, Vande Hei and Acaba actually spin each other in different axes, perhaps also to study Newton’s Laws of Motion. Check out the video below:
