Warner Bros had struck a deal with Facebook where users could ‘rent’ and stream movies via the social networking site. Last month Paramount Pictures brought more titles to Facebook and now The Big Lebowski is available from Universal Studios for rent. Users can rent the movie directly from its fan page. This coincides with the release of the film on Blu-ray. NBC Universal worked with F-commerce developer Milyoni to bring some additional sharing features to the rental service.

Users can share and comment on certain parts of the film individually, along with being able to comment on the entire film. They can “like” their favourite quotes and scenes. They can also see what their friends and other Facebook users have said while watching the movie. Users can also give five friends a $1 (Rs. 45) discount on the rental (a 48 hour rental for this movie is 30 Facebook credits which is $3 or Rs. 136).

The Big Lebowski is a film that found more success in DVD sales and rentals than in theatres. Being on Facebook makes sense for this film even though it’s already available on Amazon, Cinema Now and Vudu. Watching movies on Facebook is convenient and can make for new fans for movies like this one.
