Vivo has entered the selfie-focussed phone market with the launch of the Vivo V5 with a 20MP front-facing camera priced at Rs 17,980. This puts it in direct competition with the Gionee S6s and the OPPO F1s. We’ve put all three in the ring, to find out which one emerges as the winner, at least on paper. Design Sporting a unibody design, the Vivo V5 is an all-metal device with rounded edges alongside a rounded 2.5D screen that is built of Gorilla Glass 3. The Gionee S6s has a metal back with a plastic frame along with a 2.5D curved glass up front. The Oppo F1s sports a metal back and frame. In terms of design, overall there is nothing revolutionary about all three. Display The 5.5-inch display of the V5 features 720 x 1280 pixels of resolution, which is quite disappointing. Though the images didn’t pixellate as much as we’d expected in the limited time we got to spend with the device, Vivo could have opted for a Full HD display. The Gorilla Glass protection version is unspecified. Similarly, Oppo F1s also sports a 5.5-inch display with a 1280×720 resolution that translates to 267ppi and Gorilla Glass 4 protection. In terms of the display, unlike the others, the Gionee S6s comes with a 5.5-inch display with a Full HD resolution and Gorilla Glass 3 protection. Camera Over the years, the front-facing camera has become one of the prime features. The Vivo V5 comes equipped with a whopping 20MP front facing unit that uses a 1/2.78 inch Sony IMX376 sensor with an f/2.0 aperture to deliver detailed selfies. This along with the special Moonlight Selfie flash is supposed to deliver a soft flash that should mimic professional lighting set ups. Add to it, Ultra HD, Night, Voice Shutter, Touch Capture, Palm, Timer, Gender Detection, Filter, Watermark for the front camera. The Gionee packs in an 8MP sensor with an f/2.2 aperture, 5P lens setup and an LED flash for brighter selfies. And, the F1s gets a whopping 16MP front-facing camera with f/2.0 aperture, incorporates the ISOCELL technology, wide-angle lens, along with features like Beautify 4.0 and Full HD recording. Though the front LED flash is missing, Oppo includes a screen flash. With our limited usage time with the Vivo V5 ( first impressions ) and full reviews of the Gionee S6s and the Oppo F1s out, all three were capable of taking decent selfies, but both Oppo and Gionee devices face a low light struggle. We will be unable to comment on low light capabilities of the V5 as we have yet to extensively test test the device. When it comes to the rear snapper, Vivo V5, Oppo F1s, and Gionee S6s pack in 13MP sensors each. OS and processor The V5 runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow with a layer of Vivo’s Funtouch OS 2.6 that keeps things refreshed. The S6s runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box with a layer of Gionee’s Amigo UI 3.2 on top. The F1s runs Oppo’s ColorOS 3.0 UI layer atop slightly older Android 5.1 Lollipop. The V5 comes with a MediaTek 6750 chipset clocked at 1.5 GHz, but there is no word on other details. It includes 4GB RAM. The Oppo F1s is fuelled by an octa-core MediaTek MT6750 processor consisting of four Cortex-A53 cores with a clock rate of 1.5GHz and the rest four Cortex-A53 cores with a clock rate of 1.0GHz. It is coupled with 3GB of RAM and Mali-T860 GPU handles the graphics. Gionee S6s gets MediaTek MT6753 SoC under the hood, and an octa-core processor clocked at 1.3GHz. It is paired with 3GB of RAM and a Mali-T720 GPU. Storage and connectivity All three devices get 32GB of onboard storage that can be expanded up to 128GB using a microSD card slot. The Vivo V5 gets a Hybrid Dual SIM (micro + nano/microSD), 4G LTE support, WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.1, GPS + GLONASS and microUSB port with USB OTG support. The connectivity options offered by Gionee include LTE, VoLTE, dual-SIM dual standby, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB OTG and GPS standards. And, F1s supports Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.1, microUSB, GPS/A-GPS, 4G LTE and VoLTE. Battery Battery is almost a tie with the Vivo V5 is fuelled by a 3,000mAh battery, Gionee S6s by a 3,150mAh battery and Oppo F1s by a 3,075mAh battery. Conclusion Now, in terms of overall specs, the Vivo V5 (priced at Rs 17,980) looks better positioned than the Gionee S6s priced at Rs 17,990 and OPPO f1s at Rs 17,999. Although, both Gionee and OPPO devices are listed at slightly lower prices online, all three fall under the same price bracket more or less. Gionee S6s still gets a better display, but the V5 comes equipped with a MediaTek 6750, 4GB RAM and 20MP front-facing camera. In terms of camera, the Vivo V5 tries to keep up with the promises of the most genuine selfie-smartphone with 20MP snapper and Moonlight flash along with a host of software features. The Oppo F1s does lag in terms of overall specs, but comes with a decent 16MP front camera and screen flash. Though V5 seems like the winner overall, at least on paper, we would be able to comment on which one is the selfie king only after an extensive testing.
This puts it in direct competition with the Gionee S6s and the OPPO F1s. We’ve put all three in the ring, to find out which one emerges as the winner, at least on paper.
