Vivaldi has just released version 1.7 of the lightweight power user oriented web browser. It introduces a slew of new features including advanced screenshots, audio control and more.
There is now an in built screen shot feature that can be mapped to a keyboard shortcut. A camera icon on the status bar throws up the screenshot option. The convenient part about this feature, which is not available through the regular screenshot functionality through the Print Screen button, is the ability to save the entire web page as an image, not just the visible part. Users can save a portion of the screen as well, in the JPEG and PNG file formats.
Vivaldi 1.5 added an integrated notes feature, that allowed users to save custom notes about a web page within the browser itself. Now the screenshot functionality has been extended to notes, and users can save screenshots of a web page in the notes section. Selected areas of a web page can also be saved in the Notes tab. The screenshot, whether of the whole page or a part of it, can be directly copied to the clipboard, to be pasted in other applications, just like a regular Print Screen command.
Jon von Tetzchner, CEO at Vivaldi Technologies says "Today, screenshots often replace written communication. Instead of sending a URL to share something interesting on a page or having to go through a long process of taking, saving, editing and only then sending a screenshot, Vivaldi users get a much more powerful and efficient tool – and multiple ways of working with it. Our aim is to improve every part of the browsing journey, and we are set on a mission to create new, exciting milestones this year and continue building a strong and user-driven browser."
The screenshot feature can be accessed through the quick commands menu, by tapping the F2 key on Windows based machines and the Command + E key on Macs. The Quick Commands menu is a handy way to access advanced features by entering a text string pertaining to the desired features. Users have to type in "Capture", to see four options, Capture Area to Disk, Capture Page to Disk, Capture Area to Clipboard and Capture Page to Clipboard.
Vivaldi has a popular sound control feature, that automatically identifies and stops the audio from tabs that are making noise. However, for those who want to open a number of tabs, Vivaldi has added an option that does not require users to find the offending tab. There is now an option to toggle the audio of all the tabs at once. Typing in "Mute" in the quick command menu brings up five options, Mute Tab, Mute Other Tabs, Mute All Tabs, Unmute Other Tabs and Unmute All Tabs.
Other additions to version 1.7 include a warning message for HTTP websites that require passwords, which is less secure than the HTTPS protocol. macOS now has native notifications. There is an expansion to customise top level domains.
The visibility of browser extensions in the address bar can be toggled, so they are not there when you do not need them. The access to favorite pinned tabs has been made quicker, and there are more instant notifications.
The latest version of the browser can be downloaded for free from the Vivaldi web site.
