International air carrier, Virgin Atlantic has lifted the ban it had imposed last week, on the use of Dell and Apple laptops. The airline had imposed the ban, after the two laptop manufacturers had recalled batteries, made by Sony, due to warnings that they were a fire hazard. Qantas and Korean Air were the two other airlines that had imposed the same ban on Dell and Apple computers over the same issue.
However, Virgin Atlantic has now revised that decision to allow its passengers to use laptops by the two manufacturers, provided that laptop serial numbers are checked by the cabin crew. The airline said that since only a small portion of the computer makers’ laptops are affected by the faulty batteries, the laptops will be allowed to be used as normal without further restrictions. If the battery comes from the affected batch as identified by Apple and Dell it will be removed.
The airline said that leads/adaptors will be offered in cabins where the seats are fitted with In Seat Power Supplies (ISPS). Moreover, the airline requires spare batteries to be removed, individually wrapped/protected and placed in Carry On Baggage. This will be limited to two batteries per passenger. In cases where no ISPS is provided, the use of the affected Dell or Apple laptop is strictly prohibited by the airline.
