Remember the woman who quit her job by putting up a YouTube video of her interpretative dance to Kanye West’s “Gone”? Well, thanks to the video, West’s song has made its way back to Billboard’s Hot 100 charts – after eight years of its release!
Billboard in an article revealed that Gone, from West’s album Late Registration had managed to get onto the charts at last, years after it was first released. Thanks to the viral video, the digital sales of the track have gone up from “miniscule levels” in the previous weeks to 9,000 in last week’s tracking frame, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
Gone is here to stay
The overall usage of the track in videos raked in 6.2 million US streams for this song, the Nielsen BDS showed. This was enough for Gone to be propelled on to the fourth spot of the Streaming Songs chart.
The song being brought back into the spotlight is a pretty interesting story. For those who’re unaware about what happened, comedian and writer Maria Shifrin threw in the towel on her job as a video editor. She put up an dance video shot inside her office as a resignation letter to her boss. West’s track Gone was used since it fit the situation. The video has pulled in over 15 million views since it was uploaded on September 28. Shrifin’s video’s popularity even forced her former company, Next Media Animation to try and come up with a video response to her, but it was nowhere as memorable as the original.
The Verge says that this is not the first time the popularity of a viral video has managed to move the reach of official charts. Harlem Shake – remember that? – propelled US DJ Baauer’s song to the top of the Hot 100 chart too.
