From streaming simple media files to support for multiple audio and video compressing formats, VLC has maintained its credibility delivering seamless performance across varied platforms over the past 23 years. While the open source video player app is free to use, and most importantly it doesn't gather user's data, VideoLan, the development team for VLC at CES 2019, announced that the app will get AirPlay support soon.
Jean-Baptise Kempf, the president and lead developer of VideoLan told Variety that it will add AirPlay support to VLC app and the update might be released for free in "about a month." With this update, VLC users will be able to beam video files from their iPhone or Android phone to the Apple TV.
While Variety noted that the update could be released in a month, The Verge cites that VLC has not set a specific release date yet. As per the publication, VLC says that like the Chromecast, the company 'intend' to support AirPlay on any platform. The release date has not been set yet, however, the company plans the update to be a part of VLC 4, The Verge reports. 'We will let you know in advance once we define a date,' VLC told the publication. The next major update for VLC dubbed as v4.0 is said to offer improvements in HDR video quality.
Besides adding AirPlay support, VideoLan announced another milestone at the Consumer Electronics Show. As per the company, the VLC app has been downloaded more than 3 billion times across various platforms. As per the previous stats, this 2 billion tops from 1 billion downloads in May 2012. Apparently, the company is planning to bring the 'media player' to Sony PlayStation 4, Roku and Nintendo Switch. However, one must take this with a pinch salt until VLC comes up with something concrete.
