What do you get when you cross Sony Computer Entertainment Europe with British Telecommunication? Why a PSP that can make video calls of course! The two companies have signed a four year contract to develop a plethora of features for the PlayStation Portable, which will focus on providing high quality handheld video calls, voice calls and other telecommunication features using wireless broadband technology. The services will be offered in UK initially, and spread through into other European regions.

Here’s David Reeves, president of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, had to say about the move:

“It is very exciting for us to be partnering with BT on such a unique project. The opportunity to combine our market leading expertise with BT’s knowledge in communications opens up many possibilities and we look forward to bringing many exciting communication functions to PSP fans.”

We’ve seen mobile phones turn into handheld gaming devices in the past (remember the N-gage?), but this will be the first time we see it happen the other way around. Either way, in the long run telecommunication and interactive entertainment will merge seamlessly (it’s already doing so in many way), forming an even more immersive experience that’ll seep deep into your daily life.
