Vertu planning a 3,000 Euro Android phone

Are you ready to shell out a few thousand dollars for a luxury Android phone? If yes, the erstwhile Nokia luxury division Vertu has just the phone for you. The company is planning to launch a fancy Android handset worth a whopping 3,000 Euros.

If Russian blogger Eldar Murtazin is to be believed, the phone will see the light of day sometime in the second half of the year. Murtazin wrote on Twitter, “Vertu going to launch Android smartphones and reopen market with Nokia 8800 legacy (3000 euro, most affordable Vertu with Android).”

Alleged product shots of the Vertu Constellation Ti have also been spotted all over Bluetooth SIG, GLBenchmark and telecom regulator databases in Singapore and Macau, reports Engadget.

The Ti, or the Constellation Ti, has the model number RM-828V and will supposedly feature an 800 x 400 display, a 1.5GHz processor, Bluetooth 4.0 and NFC. Blog of Mobile added that the phone will run on a Snapdragon MSM8260A SoC with a WCDMA 850/900/1700/1900/2100 radio, and will be accompanied by a 1,250mAh battery. It will run on Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich, though. If the talk about the specs turns out to be true, for the price of the product, you’re getting a rather raw deal.

Bluetooth SIG stated in its description of the Ti: “VERTU Ti possesses the classic Vertu design DNA and characteristics—strong, unique and distinctive. The design and craftsmanship positions VERTU Ti alongside other iconic products in the luxury market."

If the images are anything to go by, the phone indeed does retain the trademark Vertu design, which won’t be winning any beauty pageants soon. The phone has three keys to denote ‘home’, ‘back’ and ‘recent apps’ like most Android devices.

A Russian retailer has listed four variants of the Constellation Ti on its website—‘Titanium Black PVD black leather,’ ‘Titanium Black Alligator,’ ‘Red Gold Mixed Metal’ (with a search button instead of the recent apps one) and ‘Titanium Black Leather.’

This is not the first time rumours of a Vertu touchscreen phone have surfaced. Images of a phone called Constellation T emerged in October 2011. The phone was to have a 3.5-inch nHD AMOLED touchscreen display with dual mode WCDMA Penta-band 850/900/1700/1900/2100 MHz and GSM quad-band 850/900/1800/1900 connectivity. It was also said to have an 8 megapixel camera sensor with twin LED flash and heptagon lens, 32GB of internal memory, and a refined version of Symbian UI as its operating system

This phone has still not seen the light of day, though. One reason for its premature death could be Nokia selling off Vertu to EQT VI, part of the private equity group in Northern Europe. “This is a logical next step in the evolution of Vertu as the world leader in luxury mobile products,” said Perry Oosting, President of Vertu had said at the time. “Since Vertu began in 1998, our business has grown every year, due to the efforts of our talented workforce and the unique products and services we offer to our customers. We believe that EQT VI will position Vertu to continue to grow and lead in our marketplace.”

To think that Vertu came up with this phone after years of no-show is slightly amusing to say the least.
