US cyber security executive order mirrors India's cyber security framework

Cyber security is one of the leading issues that countries around the world are facing today. To counter such crimes, in 2011, the Indian government drafted the cyber security bill to help reduce the impact of cybercrimes. And now it looks like the US too is making an attempt to counter this development by taking leads from the Indian draft.

According to The Economic Times, India claims that the Obama administration has come up with an executive order that resembles the cyber security initiatives by India. This is after the US government had failed to get the Cyber Security Bill approved in the Senate.

As per a document released by the National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS), the agency that looks into the country’s political, economic and strategic security concerns, the executive order issued by the US President on February 12 mirrored the initiatives taken by the Indian government on its framework for the cyber security bill.

The document states 12 instances where the US order mirrors India’s cyber security framework. These include setting out a cyber security policy, defining critical infrastructure, information sharing between departments and protection of civil liberties.

In the past, both India and US have been victims of cyber attacks originating from various parts of the globe. While the Indian home and defence ministries had come under hacking attacks a few years back, the US Department of Defense had also alleged that China was cyberspying against the US government.

However, it looks like US has taken some more steps in its efforts to stop cybercrime as the executive order includes some more aspects that could help in preventing cybercrime. “The executive order stipulates time frames for auction that are still absent in the Indian perspective. There appears to be greater recognition of and sensitivity to threats in cyber space and, hence, a greater sense of urgency than what is apparent in India. There are also closer linkages with the private sector and a more defined consultative process,” adds the report.
