Upcoming Nikon Coolpix S800c will run Android

The fact that Android is growing at an astonishing pace is no surprise to most of us. Those who have been glued to various tech websites will know that Google’s mobile operating system is not just limited to mobile phones and tablets but is in use with various other segments of technology as well. If a report by Nikon Rumors is anything to go by, then we can see the Android operating system expanding its way even further and landing right on the upcoming Nikon S800c compact camera.

STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD

Is this the future of cameras?

Is this the future OS for cameras?

As per the report, the author notes, “Nikon will finally announce a new Android based compact camera. The model name will probably be Coolpix S800 (or S800c) as you can see in this Indonesian Communication Agency filing (filed on July 31, 2012).”  The website has shared a few details of what we can expect from the camera and here is a quick look at some of the highlighted features it may possess:

  • 25-250 mm lens
  • 3.5-inch OLED screen
  • The camera runs all Google Play apps
  • The camera will probably run Android 2.3
  • Built-in GPS
  • Built-in Wi-Fi
  • Possible announcement: August 22, 2012

As of now, the details are not that beefy and there is no word available on how many pixels will be featured here or any other specifications for that matter.

The report goes on to state that if Nikon does intend to unveil the camera at Photokina, then this will be a major announcement for the brand. As of now, there is only information on this model and there is no word known if the brand does intend on releasing a high end model running on the Android operating system.

At the Photokina event, Nikon is not the only brand that is looking to steal the spotlight and it is widely expected that Fujifilm will take the wraps off the X200 which is a successor to the X100. If you are in the dark regarding what the Fujifilm X100 is about and want to snag yourself a model before the stocks get taken off the shelves, then this bit of information will be useful for you. The X100 features a hybrid viewfinder. It allows you to see real time image data such as shutter speed, aperture, white balance and ISO settings as an overlay on the optical viewfinder. This means you get the perfect frame for your picture, thanks to the optical viewfinder, while receiving real time image data as you shoot. On the specifications side, the X100 packs in a 12.3 MP sensor with a 23 mm Fujinon lens. Its customized APS-C CMOS sensor and the new EXR image processor ensure good quality pictures. The camera comes with a 2.8-inch display, supports 720p video recording (24fps), HDMI-mini out and is powered by a Li-ion battery.

The offering from Nikon will be in a completely different category than the model from Fujifilm, but with the two announcements we can see how camera technology has grown over the years. Let us know your thoughts on Android being featured in a camera in the comments below.
