UNICEF to provide clean water to a child for every minute you don't use your phone

If you’ve always wanted to help people less fortunate than you but were too caught up with your work and social life, here’s a good way to do so, even as you disconnect from the hustle and bustle of your life for a bit. The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has come up with a rather ingenious way for you to help those in need.

The UNICEF Tap Project will let you donate clean water to children in need without you even needing to get up from that chair you’re sitting in. All it asks is you don't use their phones for a bit. For every minute you go without using your phone, one of UNICEF Tap Project’s sponsor will donate a day of clean water to a child.

To be a part of the project and help the organisation provide clean water to children, all you need to do is visit http://unicefproject.org from your mobile phone. Keep the phone unmoved – and unlocked – while you’re on the site, and the counter in front of you will inform you how much water you’ve donated. The more you leave your phone be, the more you manage to help those in need.

The more you stay away from your phone, the more you donate

The website uses your device’s accelerometer to check if you’re moving around with your phone. However, you can still cheat a little and tap and swipe on your phone to use it without moving it around and the website will still believe you haven’t been using the phone.

Sounds simple, eh? Not using your phone for a long time could be a slightly challenging task for those who are addicted to checking their phones for notifications every few minutes. The ingenious website serves a dual purpose of helping children in need and also help people put their phones to better use than just surfing Facebook or tweeting.

The UNICEF Tap project has been a yearly affair since 2007, helping over 2 billion people since get access to clean drinking water. UNICEF is also accepting donations – over and above mobile minutes – that will allow you to donate as little as $5 to provide for 200 days of clean water for a child.
