After a really long hiatus, Motorola is back with a bang with the Moto G. A phone aimed at emerging markets such as ours, the Moto G is a strong statement from Motorola that challenges other big established brands, forcing them to up their game. The handset promises most features that other Chinese clones have been offering but with the assurance of proper software updates and the backing of good after sales service, which only the bigger brands deliver.

Unboxing the Motorola Moto G: Good things come in a small package

After a really long hiatus, Motorola is back with a bang with the Moto G. A phone aimed at emerging markets such as ours, the Moto G is a strong statement from Motorola that challenges other big established brands, forcing them to up their game. The handset promises most features that other Chinese clones have been offering but with the assurance of proper software updates and the backing of good after sales service, which only the bigger brands deliver.   We got the 16GB variant of the Moto G in our lab and here’s a quick unboxing video of the phone. The packaging is very minimalistic and the contents include a charger, headset and some user manuals. Weirdly, the charger is not modular, which means there is no USB data cable for transferring data from a computer.     For the uninformed, the Moto G sports a 4.5-inch HD ‘edge-to-edge’ display with a resolution of 1280×720 pixels, amounting to a pixel density of 329ppi, and Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection. The dual-SIM handset runs Android 4.3 for now, though the company has “guaranteed” that the smartphone will be getting Android 4.4 KitKat soon. Under the hood, the device comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 (Cortex-A7) processor clocked at 1.2GHz along with an Adreno 305 GPU and 1GB of RAM. For photography, there’s a 5-megapixel rear camera with LED flash as well as a 1.3-megapixel front shooter. The rear camera comes with HD (720P) video recording support. The handset sports a water-resistant nanocoating on the inside and outside. Rounding up the package is a 2070mAh battery, which the company claims will give 30 percent more talk time than Apple’s current flagship, the iPhone 5s. FM radio support is packed in and the curved back panel is removable. The company is also offering 65GB of free Google Drive storage.
