UK Lifts Ban on MP3 FM Devices

UK authorities have lifted the ban on MP3 FM transmitters, in accordance with the Wireless Telegraphy Act of 1949. Ofcom , which is the independent regulator for UK communications industry, will now allow the use of MP3 FM devices such as Griffin’s iTrip, which were banned because their transmissions could interfere with broadcasts of legal radio stations.

The devices will be allowed to tune in to FM frequencies from December 8 onwards, after a public consultation exercise in the country compelled Ofcom to lift the ban. The move also reflects the new Wireless Telegraphy (Exemption) (Amendment) Regulations 2006 which deems certain low-power transmitters to be legal. The new amendments will now apply to the European Union’s standards on low-power transmitters.

The MP3 transmitters, which are approved by Ofcom will carry a CE mark indicating that the device is legal in the European Union.
