Uber has updated its community guidelines , and for the first time has given reasons for which riders can lose access to the service. Uber policy so far was geared towards only drivers losing access to the service. The policy is only applicable in the United States. The updated guidelines are an effort to ensure both riders and drivers have a five star experience in every ride.

Uber has stated that it will take steps against rude, abusive or violent riders. When an offense is reported, Uber will investigate the issue, during which time the accounts of the riders may be suspended. Riders will lose their accounts immediately for violence, sexual misconduct, discrimination or illegal activity. Uber intends to disable accounts of repeat offenders, or those who are uncooperative to the investigation efforts.

The reasons for which riders can lose access to the service are pretty clearly stated. The riders are expected to treat the vehicle as their own, and show appropriate care towards the car. Vomiting after consumption of alcohol, damaging the vehicle, smoking in the car, intentionally spilling food or drinks are some reasons over which riders can lose access. Physical contact is discouraged, and Uber has a strict no sex policy. Flirting, asking personal questions, or making unwanted comments and gestures are considered offenses.

Violence and threats can lead to riders getting kicked from the service, and riders are expected to be respectful to the driver and co-passengers at all times. Contacting the driver unnecessarily after the ride is over is a violation of the guidelines. Riders are expected to follow the local laws, and not use Uber vehicles to commit a crime. Uber has suggested that riders and drivers both follow the golden rule, which is to treat people as you would like to be treated yourself.
