Uber has announced a strategic partnership with Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) to open a robotics research center with a view to eventually start working on driver-less cars.

According to the blogpost by Uber, the company said that it will focus on the development of key long-term technologies that advances their company’s mission of bringing ‘safe, reliable transportation to everyone, everywhere’.

The partnership will allow Uber officials to work closely with with CMU faculty, staff, and students, both on campus and also at the National Robotics Engineering Center where they can do some research and development in areas such as vehicle safety and auto technology.

Jeff Holden, Uber Chief Product Officer posted that, “We are excited to join the community of Pittsburgh and partner with the experts at CMU, whose breadth and depth of technical expertise, particularly in robotics, are unmatched.” He added that, “This collaboration and the creation of the Uber Advanced Technologies Center represent an important investment in building for the long term of Uber.”

Earlier, Google had announced that it was preparing to offer its own ride-hailing service , putting it in direct competition with Uber. But on the other hand, this  report  claims that Google has denied the news that it is readying a ride-sharing service. We cannot be sure until there is an official statement by the company.
