Twitter Discover updated for iPhone, Android

If Twitter for you is also about discovering relevant content, then Twitter’s newest version of its Discover feature for mobile users should be of interest. Yesterday, in an official post on its Engineering Blog, Twitter introduced its new Discover feature for iPhone and Android phone users.

Introducing its changelog, Daniel Loreto, engineering manager, Search and Relevance at Twitter shared that Twitter set up the backend from ground up for this new release; ditto for the user interface to enhance the use of Twitter cards. With Twitter cards, users will now be able to see Tweets in Discover with links to news and photos. This format is interactive and replaces the earlier story previews. “And supporting Twitter cards on the backend means we can more directly improve the user experience in our native apps, too,” elaborates the post.

Twitter reveals that content from cards partners will display as previews in the stream. Users will get headlines and publication names for story summaries and photo previews instead of shortened URLs.

Loreto shares that the new features mean that now it will take users fewer taps, fewer screen views to see more content quickly. Users will be able to tap through to the Details view for richer story summaries, bigger photos, and the ability to reply to tweets, Favorite or retweet them. Loreto shares that with the changes, Twitter aims to make Discover the place where one can find the “best of that content relevant to you, even if you don’t necessarily know everyone involved."

Recently, we reported about enmity between Twitter and Instagram, which started after Facebook purchased the image-sharing social networking platform. According to the New York Times, Twitter is planning to update its mobile apps to introduce filters – much like Instagram – and allow users to quickly click pictures, and share them over the microblogging website.

Though it might seem unnecessary to introduce the Instagram-like feature to a wildly successful social networking website, it may help users share photos more easily without having to download an extra app.

Recently, Instagram received an update that improved the sharing on Twitter. Instagram revealed that it will now translate @mentions for users who have a Twitter username different from their Instagram one.

STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD

If the @mentioned user’s Instagram account is connected to Twitter, her Instagram username will show up in the image caption, while her Twitter username will appear in the tweet. The @mentioned users whose Instagram accounts are not connected to Twitter will have their Instagram username show up in the image caption and the @sign will be omitted from the username when the image is shared to Twitter. As for those @mentions that do not match any Instagram usernames, the @ sign will be carried over to Twitter as they are.
