Tom Clancy, the author behind a number of military thrillers, movies and video games, is no more. He passed away on Tuesday in Baltimore at the age of 66. The cause of his death has not been disclosed at this point.

The author’s passing was first reported by Publishers Weekly and later confirmed by the New York Times. Publishers Penguin Random House later tweeted its condolences, saying, “We are saddened by the passing of beloved bestselling author Tom Clancy. Fans worldwide, including us, will miss him greatly.”

While Clancy is best known for his works as an author, many of his stories have served as inspiration for a range of video games including the “Hunt for Red October”, “The Sum of All Fears”, and “Shadow Watch”. His influence on the video game industry increased considerably when he co-founded Red Storm Entertainment in 1996. The studio found its first hit when it released the first-person tactical shooter “Rainbow Six” in 1998.

Ubisoft purchased the studio in 2000 and has steadily added seventeen other titles to the “Rainbow Six” series. The game developers have also come up with a host of other popular titles using Tom Clancy’s name. This includes stellar gaming experiences like Ghost Recon, which currently has 13 games in the series, “Splinter Cell”, currently counting seven games in the series, “EndWar”, “H.AW.X”, and the soon-to-be released “The Division”.

The author, apart from his work in the video game industry, has also had 17 novels featured in the New York Times best-sellers list. A number of them, including “A Hunt for Red October” and “The Sum of All Fears” have been made into feature films. The author’s next novel, “Command Authority” is slated to be released on December 3. The next game with his name, “Tom Clancy’s The Division” will be released in the latter half of next year by Ubisoft.
