Timex launched the Ironman One GPS+ smartwatch , becoming the first traditional watchmaker to enter the smartwatch business. The GPS+ is aimed primarily at athletes, with fitness features such as a built-in heart rate monitor and an accessory chest strap. The smartwatch is priced at $399.95 and will work for free on the AT&T network for a year. Here’s a look at the five best features of the latest smartwatch.
1. Does not need a smartphone: One of the best features that sets it apart from existing smartwatches is that it doesn’t need to be paired with a smartphone. This means you can go for a jog or work out in the gym without carrying a smartphone. It comes with 4GB of built-in storage so you can save around a thousand songs and play from the smartwatch directly with Bluetooth headphones.
2. GPS enabled: The smartwatch is GPS enabled, which means users can track maps and keep a record of the distance covered. There’s an SOS mode that notifies your contacts about your current location if you’re in need of help.
3. 3G: It works on the 3G network, so you can use maps, send messages, emails and send status updates to supported apps at 3G speeds, without being tethered to a smartphone. You can track your progress, in terms of speed, pace and other workout details and send them to your preferred websites .
4. Rugged, water resistant: The rugged Timex smartwatch can withstand rough use and be submerged in up to 150 feet of water. This makes it resistant to sweat and is suitable for swimmers, too.
5. Display: The 1.5-inch touchscreen always stays on whether you’re using the screen or not. The GPS+ features Qualcomm’s Mirasol low-power display technology, which allows users to see the screen even in direct sunlight.
Other features include support for fitness apps such as MapMyRun, RunKeeper and Strava. It’s Bluetooth-enabled, so you can share files and pair it with wireless headphones.
Smartwatches are yet to make major inroads with consumers, but the GPS+ seems like great interpretation as it focusses only on few essential features instead of adding all the mod cons. For example, you can’t expect many apps like you would see on the Android-based LG G watch or the S amsung Galaxy Gear 2 . You can’t make or receive calls either. However, the fact that it’s independent of a phone means it would be simpler to use, while adding useful features such as music and GPS.
