By Abhilash Pavuluri July goes away and in comes August. What with Google developing a fun game for the Olympics and the release of Suicide Squad, we’re pumped about this week’s app roundup. Read on! Google Doodle Fruit Games The most fun app of the week comes from none other than the great search engine itself, Google. Introducing, the Doodle Fruit games for Android and iOS. Simply install the Google app (or update it if you have the app already) by visiting g.co/fruit and following the link. Then, get playing! The games are based on cute, fruity characters (literally), like a strawberry trying to outrun a watermelon or a spider competing in all-terrain hurdles. There are over seven such mini-games (that will be updated) to choose from, and each has a different fruit and different playing style to it. Some games even make use of your device’s sensors, like the swimming app, where you tilt the phone to navigate. Google also includes some interesting facts about fruits, which is a nice addition. We’re not certain why Google chose fruits as the mascots for their game. Maybe it’s to show that even though each fruit is different, they can all compete as equals in the same sports. Just like people! Download the app for Android and iOS Close Up Character: PicQuiz Movie, cartoon and anime fans rejoice. Now is the time to prove that time spent in watching said shows is not time wasted! Close Up Character is a picture-based quiz where an inset of famous movie/cartoon/anime/manga characters is displayed and the user has to guess the character based on the photo. It begins easily, of course, but moves are limited and as you level up, characters from relatively less-known shows are taken into account as well. There are two modes, a story mode (based on one movie/show) or a free mode, with random characters. Completing each question gives you 10 coins to be used for when you need a hint, and completing a level gives you 30 coins. There’s a wide range of levels to complete, all the way to level 15. So getting bored won’t be an option for most of you! This app was definitely a nostalgia trip for me as I saw similar faces from childhood, like Courage the Cowardly, God and Popeye, and that’s perhaps the best reason we’re recommending this app. Download the app for Android and iOS PMO India Who’d have thought that the prime minister of India would one day have his own app? The PMO app gives you a ‘peek’ into the Prime Minister’s Office and its current missions (like the Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan), the official social media handles of the PM (like his Twitter handle) and other such useful features. The app is very neatly laid out with categories for news, social media, image galleries and so on. You can either create an account with MyGov or skip it for later. One entire section of the app is devoted to news on the main screen. The next panel, which has the social feed, shows the PMO’s Twitter handle. You can change this to view the PMO’s Facebook or YouTube feed. You can also change the type of news displayed, with topics ranging from Economics to Social welfare and the like. It’s nice to see apps like these from the government which provide an insight into one of the most influential persons in the country. We’re glad that they took the initiative upon themselves, which is why we recommend you try it out. Download the app for Android Jiyo Jiyo takes its name literally: meaning “wellness” in Hindi, Jiyo is a health and well-being app launched by the well-known Deepak Chopra, who is a big proponent of the alternative health movement. Jiyo provides you with alternative health advice, ‘tracks’ your well-being with support for third-party fitness devices and provides articles or news by some of the best known health experts around the world. The app requires a login with Google or Facebook (or creating a new account) and then you have the option of connecting a fitness device to monitor your health. It then provides you with stats (in a section called Bit By Demand) as to how best improve your lifestyle, such as meditating after a hard day at work, stretching after being seated for a long time and so on. There is a well-being section called Jiyo+ that categorizes different activities, such as sleeping, eating, or exercise. And each of these sections has related articles from experts that are regularly updated as well. However, this is a paid-for service, with subscription options for each channel beginning at Rs 120. While the app can lag quite a few times and navigating through it is a bit of a hassle, Jiyo is an incredibly useful app for those seeking a lifestyle change. Download the app for Android Jalebi : The Desi word game We end this app review with another word game. Jalebi is an app from our own country that can be played in different Indian languages. While the questions themselves are the usual general knowledge questions, the fact that you can play them in say, Marathi or Kannada is the interesting part. Finding the answers in one’s vernacular can be quite challenging sometimes. Each language has its own set of questions. So the Marathi or Kannada quizzes will be different from each other in terms of questions. There is also a challenge mode where you beat the clock to get all the answers right. There is a time limit that keeps increasing by three seconds as you get the answers right. Download the app for Android
