With an increase in automation and the advent of artificial intelligence (AI), there are expected to be significant changes in the job market. The White House has released a report in the ways AI will affect the economy over the coming years and decades. The pace and direction of the development of AI will decide what sectors are affected and how soon. At a minimum, and in the near term future, drivers and cashiers are going to be replaced by machines.
AI is going to sooner or later replace millions of jobs, and affect the livelihoods of these workers. At the same time, AI will create new opportunities for individuals, the economy and the society. The report outlines the policy decisions needed to make sure that AI does not increase unemployment and inequality. The problem is that disruptive new technologies do not affect everyone in the same way.
In the 19th century, the industrial revolution meant that highly skilled individuals were not required. The jobs of craftsmen and artisans were replaced by machines. In the digital revolution, the opposite happened, and the requirement for highly skilled individuals was more. For AI, it is not possible to predict exactly who will be affected, as it is a number of technologies, and not a single technology. For the most part though, those workers with low wages, low skills and less education.
The overall approach for tackling this transformation is threefold. The first approach is investing in and develop AI to enjoy the benefits offered by replacing manual labour with machine labour. A parallel undertaking is to tweak the education system to prepare the citizens for the jobs of the future, with a focus on teaching higher technical skills. The third tactic needed is to help workers with the transformation.
